Autumn ~ The Season of The Metal Element

by Indyah Conte

During this season, our energy is being drawn inwards. We begin to notice the cooler and drier air, the trees letting go of their leaves - ready for death, followed by rebirth. Nature informs us about our cycles and the emotion associated with the Metal Element is grief or sadness. This season provides us with full support to reflect on what no longer serves our highest good and to deal with unprocessed emotions, in order to facilitate the harvesting of the years fruits, lessons and reflections. Letting go of relationships, jobs and limiting beliefs that hold us back from stepping into our fullest potential and returning to our purest essence.

The lungs & large intestine are the organ pair governing this season. The lungs bring life and inspiration into our body, whilst the large intestine helps us let go of what we don't need. During autumn, these two organs are currently most vulnerable and you might notice feelings of sadness, or a lingering cough/cold, so it's a key time to nourish these organs as best we can. We recommend incorporating some of the following into your routines & rituals to best support your mind, body & spirit during this season!

Metal Element Herbs: Reishi mushroom, ashwagandha, holy basil, cinnamon, ginger, cayenne, astragalus, blue lotus, star anise, nutmeg, garlic, bay leaf, turmeric, black pepper, thyme, elderberry, echinacea, peppermint, rosemary. Spicy & pungent herbs and foods for immunity, circulation & nourishment to the lungs & large intestine.

Metal Element Cooking Styles: Stewing, soups, baking, long saute, boiling, thicker cuts, more salt and spicy seasoning is best used now.

Metal Element Fruit & Vegetables: Carrot, yams, parsnip, turnip, swede, onion, dandelion greens, leek, brussel sprouts, broccoli, pumpkin, cauliflower, shiitake mushrooms, tofu, rice, burdock, honey, daikon, red radish, seaweed, apple, pears, dried fruits, nuts & seeds.

Metal Element Essential Oils: Cinnamon for relieving anxiety, eucalyptus for strengthening the respiratory system. Take deep & slow breaths to support the lungs.

When we are in balance and harmony with The Metal Element, our lungs are strong and our immune system can protect us against any harm from the external environment. When we are in balance and harmony with The Metal Element, we have the ability to grieve healthily and let go with gentleness, love and acceptance. Make sure to check in with yourself right now, bring your body back into balance with the healing power of herbs, food, massage, meditation & movement. What are you being asked to alchemise?
